E-commerce – Drop shipping

Assignment Questions

Pros:

  1. No inventory required – The supplier takes care of inventory.
  2. Low overhead costs – Minimal equipment will have to be purchased and no office, physical storefront, or warehouse will have to be purchased.
  3. Easy to scale business – Physical stores are subject to significant costs and effort when expanding their businesses due to construction requirements, new equipment, etc. These are not as prevalent of problems for drop shipping businesses.
  4. Wide potential selection – Because items don’t need to be pre-purchased and storage space is not a restriction, drop shippers can sell a very wide selection of goods.

Cons:

  1. Drop shipping niches can be very competitive.
  2. Inventory issues – Inventory syncing solutions between suppliers and drop shipping businesses can be faulty. This means a drop shipper might end up selling a product that is out of stock, and the customer may have to wait longer than expected to receive the item.
  3. Bearing responsibility for supplier error – Sometimes suppliers make mistakes in packaging and shipping products. However, because customers order from the drop shipper, it is them who takes the blame.

Owning a store whether physical or online doesn’t interest me very much. However, if that were to change, I would certainly consider drop shipping before a traditional retail model. This is because the low overhead cost of drop shipping is rather appealing.

Affiliate marketing is a monetization model whereby businesses offer compensation to individuals or entities (known as affiliates) that promote their company or products in some way. Often times this involves referral links, where affiliates get paid when someone accesses the company site through their referral link, or purchases a product with a special promo code from the affiliate. In this way, both the business and the affiliate benefit. The business sells more products and grows their customer base, while the affiliate gets paid for helping make those things happen.
