Google Analytics

What is Google Analystics?

In short, Google Analytics is a popular website maintenance tool used to view user information and understand how audiences interact with a site. This information can help inform a designer on how to better meet user preferences, how to retain users for longer, attain more views, and influence design choices in many other ways.

A few Google Analytics features
  1. You can see how long users stay and the percentage of users that leave before visiting other pages on your site (bounce rate). You can even see what pages users access, which can indicate what kinds of content are in demand and, adversely, what kinds of content aren’t.
  2. You can see the geographical location of users, their browsers, screen resolutions, Flash support status and more.
  3. Additionally, Google Analytics can determine what times users visit your site. This can be useful for finding the optimal time for publishing new content.
  4. How users access your site can also be viewed. This could be through search engines, direct links, or referral links from external websites. Such knowledge could possibly influence choices about what search engines to target for search engine optimization (SEO), or other ways to promote your site, including through possible partnerships with external websites that your audience may be coming from.
  5. Google Analytics displays a lot of statistics, some of which may not be relevant information for your purposes. In that case, clutter can be reduced by applying (and even creating) filters to display only the information that is relevant for your purposes.
